Don’t Let Game Day Fumbles Ruin Your Sofa

Dropped passes are part of any football game, and they don’t just happen on the field. Passing a bowl of dip and chips across the family room to your wannabe cheerleaders can result in an incomplete. Flag down. Guacamole down and everywhere.

When it happens on your sofa or carpet, it’s time to call A Personal Touch Carpet Cleaners, the “groundskeeping” experts.

Before you pick up the phone, though, there are a few things you can do to keep the damage to your carpet or rug to a minimum.

If the stain is still moist, use a sponge or absorbent towel to blot up any liquid. Use a blotting action, not rubbing, to keep the stain from penetrating deeper into the fibers. Most spills will clean up with a mild dishwashing liquid and warm water. Don’t use alcohol, fingernail polish remover, Soft Scrub or Fabuloso on your upholstery or wall-to-wall carpet. Always test any cleaning solution on an inconspicuous area to be sure it doesn’t fade or bleach the fabric. Use the sponge to dab the solution into the fabric without rubbing. Then blot the solution up, and rinse the area gently with clean warm water. Repeat as needed until the spill and stain are gone.

Natural products, like vinegar, are perfect for spills. Once the stain is gone, mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water and in a spray bottle. Spritz the area with the solution and blot it up gently until the fabric is mostly dry. Then put several layers of clean, absorbent towels over the damp area, weight them down, and leave overnight to soak up any remaining moisture. You can use books as weights, but be sure the absorbent material is thick enough that moisture won’t wick up and ruin the book binding.

Repeat the process the following day if needed.
